On Monday, 29 May, the government of Republic of Serbia adopted the global climate change agreement, Paris Agreement. By adopting the Agreement, Serbia has become a party that ratified the Paris Agreement and committed to contribute to GHG emission reduction on global level. The ratification of the Paris Agreement confirms that R. of Serbia is committed to participate in international processes as an equal partner, but also increases the probability to use international funds for achieving the goals and low GHG emission development.
The goal of the Paris Agreement is to reduce GHG emission that will limit the temperature rise at 2oC on global level. Scientist set the limit for safety reasons, after which climate change adaptation process will be much less possible.
The Paris Agreement was adopted on 21st Conference of Parties by United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 21), which came into force on 4 November 2016. The Agreement can enter into force only if at least 55 countries ratify the Agreement which represents 55% of global greenhouse gas emissions. For each country the Paris Agreement enters into force after ratification on national level. Implementation period of the Paris Agreement starts in 2021.
