Supporting UNFCCC reporting for Serbia

The kickoff meeting of the project “Supporting UNFCCC reporting for Serbia” was organized with the aim to inform broader stakeholder group, representatives of national and local institutions, public and private sector, media, academia and CSOs, on plans and expected results of this 4-year project implemented by the Ministry of Environmental Protection with technical support of the UNDP and financial support of Global Environmental Facility (GEF).

Minister of Environmental Protection, Goran Trivan pointed out the importance of combating climate change due to their big impact on nature, society, economy and health. “Climate change issues are very important for all of us. Serbia is committed to GHG emission reductions, as well as all other countries worldwide, and the Ministry is also contributing in meeting relevant national and international requirements. Within the framework of this project Second Biennial Update Report and Third National Communication to the UNFCCC will be prepared.”

UNDP Deputy Resident Representative, Steliana Nedera pointed out that Serbia is located in one of the Europe’s most vulnerable regions when it comes to climate change, and the previous submitted reports indicated that most vulnerable economic sectors to the adverse impacts of climate change are agriculture, forestry and water resources. UNDP joined efforts with the Ministry in supporting and improving multisectoral collaboration of all relevant national and international actors, in order to better respond to climate change issues and impacts, and to make local communities more resilient to climate change.

National Project Director, Andrej Bojic, stressed the importance of the preparation of Reports to the UNFCCC, in fulfillment of Convention requirements, due to the fact that Serbia is Party to the Convention since 2001. “GHG emission reductions as well as adaptation and mitigation measures are one of priorities of the Ministry”.
