Biography

Mr. Carlo Lo Caso, was born in Palermo on September 3, 1963, where he graduated in law in 1988. He began his diplomatic career in 1990 and began his professional career in the General Directorate for Cooperation and Development of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His first function abroad was as the second trade secretary, and then the first trade secretary, in Bonn in 1994. In 1997, he transferred to the Italian Embassy in Sarajevo as the first trade secretary, where he was promoted to advisor in 2001. After returning to Rome in 2001, he was sent to the Directorate-General for Multilateral Political Affairs and Human Rights. His diplomatic career continued in 2005 at the Italian Embassy in Belgrade, where he served as First Counselor. Since 2008, he has been the ambassador to Maputo, accredited to Mbabane (Swaziland). In 2012, he returned to the Ministry in Rome, as a direct associate of the Director General for Globalization, where he became the coordinator for relations between the EU and sub-Saharan Africa. In 2013, he was the head of the Department for Balkan Countries, Central European Initiative (CEI) and Adriatic-Ionian Initiative (SEI). Since 2014, he has been Deputy Director General for the European Union and Central Director for European Countries. Since 2015, he has been the First Deputy Director General for the European Union. Ambassador Carlo Lo Caso has been the holder of the Knight – Order of the Republic of Italy for Merit since 2007.
